Life After Politics
Incorporating my diverse experiences into one website has been an interesting challenge. I spent many years in the political world, running for Anne Arundel County Executive in 2010 and for the U.S. Congress in 2004. You can find an archive of my County Executive website, including dozens of blog posts and the work I did on subjects ranging from speeding up ambulance response times to improving our schools, by clicking on the Political tab above.
While I may be best known for my political work, I’ve spent far more of my adult life as a businesswoman and serial entrepreneur. I’ve started, run and/or turned around businesses in the food, software, marketing consulting (both domestic and international), real estate and nonprofit worlds. While I have degrees in both chemical engineering and international business, marketing has underpinned everything I’ve done since my early days with Procter & Gamble.
When I refocused on the business world after five years away, I was blown away by the new marketing tools that have become available. I am having a lot of fun helping clients dramatically grow their businesses through Impact Marketing Group, Inc., a content marketing agency I launched in 2014.
In addition to loving the challenge of starting and running businesses, I have always been driven by a strong need to make a difference in the world. I’m extremely proud of the work that the Alliance for Youth Achievement, Inc., an international nonprofit I founded in 2000, did to help tens of thousands of orphans in Africa and Asia. You can learn more about what it was like to partner with dozens of tiny third world organizations to help some of the neediest children in the world in this blog post and this campaign video. More recently, I launched Anne Arundel Cares, an organization that raised over $160,000 to help local nonprofits.
My latest philanthropic endeavor is to help family members of people suffering from alcohol and drug addiction find appropriate treatment for their loved ones and increase their odds of remaining sober afterwards. Please check out the Conquer Addiction website here.
But work alone does not a life make. I have been blessed with a wonderfully supportive husband and four incredible kids, all of whom I am extremely proud of. And our first grandchild, the beautiful Milana, was born in November 2014.
Now that I’m no longer spending almost every evening and weekend at political events, I’ve found the time for some hobbies that I am greatly enjoying. I’m having a blast learning ballroom dancing (thanks, Nick, for being such a great instructor!) and am starting to cook and study Japanese again.
As the saying goes, “what a long strange trip it’s been”. And hopefully the best is yet to come. Thanks for sharing the journey with me!
