If there is one thing that advocates on all sides of the immigration debate can agree upon, it is that the current immigration system is broken. Immigration laws need to be comprehensively overhauled at the federal level so we can regain control of our borders while providing opportunities for people who are already contributing to our country to become full participants in the American dream.
Joanna supports a two-pronged approach to fixing the problem:
- Enforce our laws: There have been federal laws on the books since 1986 making it illegal to hire people who cannot prove they are in this country legally. These need to be enforced. We cannot solve the problem of illegal immigration with vigilantes on the border or building ever-higher fences. As long as someone knows they sneak across the border and find high-paying work that will allow them to feed their children, they will come. As County Executive, I will enforce these laws in Anne Arundel County.
- Provide a path to citizenship for hard-working immigrants who’ve been here for many years: Immigrants who have been working in this country for many years and paying taxes while avoiding problems with the law should be offered a reasonable path to achieve citizenship. They are likely to remain in the United States for the rest of their lives, and we don’t want their families living in a shadow economy afraid to report crime or abuse.
